BIO

Jared Hoffman is a documentary filmmaker and media artist based in Manhattan. Hoffman's lenticular paintings, light & sound installations, and quirky, internet-influenced sculptures imagine technology as the proving ground for cycles of rupture and repair.

He has exhibited works in New York, Los Angeles, Paris, and more. He graduated Cornell University with a degree in Information Science, in 2015, and will receive his MFA from City College New York in 2025. "Life's a Mother" is Hoffman's first short film.

FILM SYNOPSIS

The gnarled bond of the director’s mother and aging grandmother unfolds into a new phase through their shared toughness, grace, and care.

Nadine, a stoic woman with comically curly hair, has moved in next door to her mother: 91 year-old Elaine. The fraught lifelong dynamic between them still aggravates Nadine, especially as she takes on managing more and more of Elaine's day-to-day existence. As Elaine's eldest, she is committed to the job of caregiver. But she needs to live her own life, too. Through the observation of ordinary moments—at the swimming pool, in the sun drenched living, in the garden—these matriarchs’ hard-won relationship reveals itself as an extraordinary labor of love.
